Amazon to launch smart shopping cart

Amazon is launching a smart shopping cart, Amazon Dash Cart, in its grocery store in Woodland Hills, CA later this year.

The grocery cart is designed to make the shopper experience quicker in store, allowing customers to skip the checkout queue.

It uses a combination of computer vision algorithms and sensor fusion to identify items shoppers put in the cart. There will be a QR code in the Amazon app that will enable shoppers to easily sign in and begin using the cart. The shoppers just place their products in the cart and the cart registers the products. The cart has convenient features for grocery shopping, such as a screen at the top where shoppers can access their Alexa Shopping List to check items off and view their subtotal.

Each cart is also equipped with a coupon scanner, enabling shoppers to quickly apply store coupons as they shop. When the shopper exits through the store’s Amazon Dash Cart lane, sensors automatically identify the cart, and the shopper’s payment is processed using the credit card on the shopper’s Amazon account. A receipt is emailed to the shopper.
