Woolworths to install lockers into 500 stores

Date : 29 November 2016

Woolworths has partnered with Australia Post to install parcel collection lockers in 500 stores.

Lockers will start appearing this year...

The 24/7 parcel lockers will appear in Woolworths stores over the next five years, starting with five pilot stores in December 2016. The supermarkets that will first feature the lockers will be in Carnegie, Glen Huntly, Mentone and Northcote in Victoria. Australia Post already has a strong network of parcel collection lockers, but the new contract will triple its network over the next few years towards 2021.

Mutual click & collect partnerships are a growing trend

Retailers partnering with third party delivery firms and even other retailers to offer parcel collection in-store is a growing trend around the world. Woolworths already allow eBay customers to collect parcels in its stores and the new relationship with Australia Post will hopefully generate further footfall. This week Woolworths also announced that it was setting up a dedicated team to look at how it will respond to Amazon's launch into Australia in 2017. By strengthening its own relationships, plus the service levels it can offer both online and offline, Woolworths will undoubtedly look to defend its existing position.
