Latin America: Ta-Ta and Tienda Inglesa in focus

Date : 04 August 2016

We look at two retailers that impressed us in Uruguay: Ta-Ta and Tienda Inglesa.

Ta-Ta

Who is it?

Ta-Ta began life as a department store, evolving into a multi-format retailer which operates banners including Multi Ahorro and Ta-Ta. It has more than 100 stores across Uruguay.

What's great?

At the time of our visit Ta-Ta was celebrating its 60th birthday, and there were multiple promotions, special prices and prize draws taking place in-store, creating a party atmosphere. There is also a strong presence of private label in-store, with Ta-Ta standard ranges and Multi Ahorro entry price products.

Tienda Inglesa

Who is it?

Tienda Inglesa has 10 stores across Montevideo, Lagomar, Atlántida and Punta del Este. Stores stock a wide range of products, from clothes to food. Since May 2016, it has been majority-owned by an American investor group with 10% remaining in Uruguayan hands.

What's great?

The store we visited in Montevideo had a really lively, buzzy atmosphere. At the time we were there, it was running a promotion on French and Belgian products. A really striking display of products, accompanied by French music, took up a large space in the middle of the store. Displays and gondola ends were a standout feature, alongside extensive counters for patisserie, cakes and the ubiquitous (delicious) empanadas!
