FamilyMart and Uny Group have completed a merger, creating the second largest convenience store operator in Japan, after 7-Eleven.
Circle K Sunkus to be rebranded to FamilyMart
The launch of FamilyMart Uny Holdings Co. marks a consolidation in an industry where retailers are facing intense competition to boost sales as the Japanese economy lacks strength and the population is expected to shrink further.
As most of the 6,250 Circle K Sunkus stores operated by Uny are set to be renamed as FamilyMart, the total number of convenience stores operated by the holding company stands at around 17,000 in Japan. Industry leader Seven-Eleven Japan has around 18,800 stores.
On 1st September, three Circle K Sunkus convenience stores in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka adopted the new brand name FamilyMart.
