Both Coles and Woolworths have thrown their shoulder behind their liqour operations this week, appointing new leaders of their respective businesses, both who will start in early 2020.

Morrisons exec with 25 years international experience joins Coles

Darren Blackhurst will reportedly be taking up a lead role at Coles in Australia. Blackhurst joined Morrisons in the UK in 2015 as Group Commercial Director, having previously held roles as CEO of Matalan and Trading Director at Asda, after an 18 year career at Tesco. Last year he stepped away from his commercial role and since then has been working on strategic projects. Coles CEO Steven Cain in a memo to staff has said that Blackhurst will join Coles in early 2020 replacing Cathi Scarce who has been acting Chief Executive Liquor for the past 18 months.

New BWS managing director for Woolworths

Woolworths Group has appointed Scott Davidson as the new Managing Director of its BWS liqour chain. BWS is the retailer's smaller format liquor stores, many of which are co-located with its supermarkets. Davidson will start his role in January 2020 and will oversee driving ultra-convenience, customer renewals and introducing new ranges to the banner. Davidson has almost 15 years experience at Woolworths and is currently the GM of buying and merchandising for Countdown supermarkets in New Zealand. He replaces Guy Brent, who moved to become MD of the Woolworths FoodCo and Metro banners in July this year.
