Bestway expands in Scotland with acquisition of Sher

Date : 07 April 2014
National UK cash & carry wholesaler, Bestway has acquired the food wholesale business of Glasgow-based Sher Bros.  This will be integrated into the Batleys Scotland division, boosting its number of depots to eight within the country, and increasing the total number of Bestway group depots to 63.

Mixed retail and catering customer base

Sher Bros has operated in a number of areas of wholesaling, and its food division was established in 1990, offering both cash & carry and delivered service to independent retailers and caterers.  The current 130,000 sq ft depot on Kilbirnie Street in central Glasgow was opened in 2006.  As a long-term member of the Landmark buying group, Sher has been an active supporter of the Lifestyle Express retail club, to which it has recruited some 150 members.  Latest total sales for the Sher Bros group (including clothing wholesale) is estimated at £60m.

Depot to be re-branded Bestway Batleys

Bestway will now complete a strategic review of the Sher wholesale operation.  Sher has traditionally not stocked licensed drinks as part of its offer and it is expected that alcohol will be introduced to bring ranges in line with the wider Bestway portfolio, as well as offering an obvious means of up-weighting spend within the customer base.

Younus Sheikh, managing director of Bestway Wholesale commented:

"Bestway is continually looking at expanding our business whether that is through investment in new sites or through acquisition.  The purchase of Sher will give the Batley brand a presence in the heart of the city (Glasgow) ... and demonstrates the Bestway Group's commitment to Batleys and Scotland.  Sher Bros has been a great wholesale institution over the years and we are confident that under the Batleys brand, we can develop the business both among existing and new customers."
