After eight months of works. Sainsbury's has completed a multi-million pound relaunch of its Hempstead Valley superstore in Kent, creating a showcase for its latest product offer and format design.

Why Hempstead Valley is significant

Hempstead Valley is Sainsbury's most important store launch since Selly Oak in 2018 and takes forward the mission based thinking applied at Hedge End.

Key features of the 62,000 sq ft store include:


  • Sainsbury's first Fresh Food Market presents its fruit and veg offer in a market style setting and champions freshness, seasonality and British heritage - all elements of the retailer's recently launched Food First strategy. Following positive customer feedback Sainsbury's has now confirmed that the concept will be rolled out to further stores during 2021

  • A dedicated 'on the go hub' with snacking, coffee machine, fresh juicer and sushi bar, incorporating learnings from Sainsbury's Mansion House On the Go store that opened just before the pandemic

  • New style beauty, clothing and home sections , supported by an Argos store-instore

  • Counter innovations: a new self service patissserie counter and takeaway hot food bar and hot pizza counter

  • The on-site petrol station has been redeveloped and itsoffer updated to include more on-the-go ranges and home essentials such as cleaning products and toiletries

  • Sustainability: Changes to the store will mean that it uses 30% less gas and 15% less electricity annually, improvements that willhelp Sainsbury's to meet its Net Zero emissions target by 2040. Contributing technologies include a store wide integrated and cooling system and fast closing doors for the loading dock

The investment at Hempstead Valley complements Sainsbury's focus on developing Neighbourhood Hub stores, compact supermarkets that meet a wide range of local shopper missions.
