Kiler to open supermarkets in Qatar

Turkey-based Kiler’s CFO, Kaan Aytogu, has said that the retailer has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Qatar-based Al Rayyan, which will lead to it opening Kiler supermarkets in Qatar’s capital city, Doha. Aytogu was quoted as saying: “We expect the final agreement to be signed by September, and the first store to be opened in early 2015. Although not decided yet, we are expecting to open at least five stores in Doha.” Aytogu said that the expansion into Qatar would be part of a wider focus on the Middle East region and be the first market entry, which could eventually see it also open stores in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, Kuwait's Kuwait City, Saudi Arabia's Dammam, Bahrain's Manama and Oman's Sohar and Muscat over the course of the next five years.

LuLu and the Qatar Foundation plan online retail portal

Meanwhile, UAE-based LuLu, part of the EMKE Group, has announced that it has signed an agreement with the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), which will see the two parties establish an online shopping portal. The agreement will involve the two offering a home delivery service, which will begin as a trial for QF community members before being expanded to other shoppers potentially in the future.

Commenting on the portal, LuLu Group’s director, Mohammed Althaf, said: “Through this agreement we hope to add value to the lives of those within the Qatar Foundation community as the upcoming online shopping portal will extend beyond the borders of a mere online supermarket to become an interactive platform for the whole community.”

Monoprix expands in Qatar

Kiler will come up against Casino-owned Monoprix, which operates in the market through an agreement with the Ali Bin Ali Group, when it enters. The Ali Bin Ali Group has announced that it will be expanding its presence in the market with the addition of a 7,100 sq. m store in the Doha Festival City shopping centre.
