UAE-based LuLu Group has opened its second store in Malaysia today, after the successful launch of its first store two years ago. This expansion forms part of its investment to invest US$ 300 million to set up 10 hypermarkets and a central logistics warehouse in the country.
Second hypermarket in the country and 174th globally
The 80,000 sq ft store was inaugurated by YB Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs today. The new hypermarket is in Shamelin Mall in Cheras, located within ten minutes’ drive from Kuala Lumpur. The mall is in a densely populated neighbourhood with apartments, condominiums and light industrial factories.
Food court drives footfall
We were impressed with the great menu of delicious hot food at highly affordable prices. Families were able to enjoy the pizzas, cooked dishes with rice and Indian flat breads with curry on the opening day. There were also attractive giveaways for the first 1,000 shoppers. With 250 seats, the food court will be able to attract workers from the factories as well as the young families in the area.
The store has counters that are strong category destinations to differentiate itself from its competitors. The delicatessen has lots of Middle Eastern pickles, yogurt and olives that are not available elsewhere. Dried nuts, fruit and confectionery create a wide range of snacking varieties to tempt shoppers. The retailer was offering samples of freshly roasted almonds and cashews to shoppers on the day.
One-stop shopping for families
Besides daily necessities, the retailer carries a range of fashion apparel and electronics. Shoppers can find the latest phones, tablets, household appliances in the same store. The merchandise in the clothing department is selected with families in mind, with a wide range of apparel for all ages.
