The new format will be called Edeka Xpress and each store will be around 600 sq m.
Conversion of Tengelmann stores
Around 50 of the 170 Tengelmann stores that Edeka is acquiring will be converted to the new concept and this will happen by the end of September. This enables Edeka to choose the most appropriate Tengelmann locations for the new format and the first stores will be in Munich, Starnberg, Freising, Augsburg and Bad Tölz.
Tailoring to suit the local catchment
The product range and shop design will be optimised for each store location and will be tailored to suit the needs of the local market. There will be a focus on fresh products, including a range of fruits, vegetables and fresh herbs.
This move ties into the growing trend towards convenience stores in the German market. Rewe has also increased its convenience offerings, opening a number of Rewe-to-go stores, as well as its forecourt partnership with Aral.
