The first Makro store with a sales area of more than 7,000 sq.m. has opened in Yangon, Myanmar.

Store opened on 22 April

The wholesale store is targeting food retailers, hotels, restaurants and catering service companies. It carries 10,000 different types of fresh food, dry food and non-food products. There is a limit of 250 visitors at any time to avoid overcrowding due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Visitors were required to pre-book a slot and queue to enter the store at its opening. Myanmar’s New Year festival of Thingyan, normally celebrated in the middle of April, has been postponed to prevent the spread of the virus.

Makro overseas expansion and format innovation

The retailer has 134 stores in Thailand and has been expanding its footprint overseas in the last few years. It has three stores in India, two in Cambodia and one in China. Besides business expansion, it has also been responding to the changing needs of customers by developing different formats. This includes two digital stores launched in Thailand in 2019. These are the first stores in Thailand that connect its operation system and store management with staff, suppliers and customers. The same ecosystem has been rolled out in the store opened in China in September 2019.
