Mercadona invests in data processing centre…

Announced as part of its 2015 results statement, Mercadona has begun the construction of its new data processing centre in the area of Villadangos del Páramo, in León. The centre, which the retailer is aiming to have operational by 2018, will see it invest €21m in its building, with €6m spent on the building itself and €15m on the purchase and installing of IT equipment.

…Expands offer with new ‘Veggie’ range

Separately, Mercadona has said that it is collaborating with local meat producer Noel, which specialises in the production and distribution of cold meats, hams, fresh meat and prepared products, to launch a new line of cold meat for vegetarians. The range, called ‘Veggie’, sees meat substituted by egg whites and sunflower and virgin olive oils and will be made available initially at stores in Barcelona, Madrid and the Valencia Region.

Consum grows presence through franchised stores

Consum has announced that it has opened 15 franchised stores in H1 2016, which it says means it has completed 56% of the new stores it was aiming to add in the whole year. The 15 stores have been opened in Valencia, where it has added six, Catalonia, four, Murcia, three, and two in Castilla-La Mancha. The retailer has said that the new stores will underpin its expected revenue growth for 2016, where it is forecasting a 9% rise to more than €203m.
