B&M: 100th garden centre and plans for more

UK variety discounter B&M continues to grow, recently reaching a milestone by opening its 100th garden centre store.

Latest store opening in Salisbury

The new B&M Home Store with Garden Centre has opened in Dolphin Retail Park in Salisbury. B&M opened its first garden centre store in 2011, and it seems that branching out in to this new market has been a successful move for the discounter over the last five years as it has now reached its 100th store.

According to B&M, last year it sold 'enough artificial turf to cover more than nine football pitches, enough fence panels to cross the English Channel five times, and more than five million plants'.

10 more garden centres in 2016

B&M has bold store opening plans for this year as it aims to build on its ambitions to reach 850 stores. In FY2016/17, B&M is looking to open a total of 50 stores, however by the end of the 2016 calendar year, it plans to open a further 10 home stores with garden centres.

The format works well for B&M, and with 21% of high street discount shoppers doing all or almost all of their shopper on impulse, this is a real opportunity to drive sales over the summer season. To read more shopper insights on impulse purchasing in high street discounters, click here.

More discounters attracting shoppers with gardening

While on a much smaller scale, variety discounter Poundland caught on to the gardening trend earlier this year with the launch of its third celebrity range 'In the garden with Charlie Dimmock'

Speaking about the introduction of the new range, then-CEO Jim McCarthy said 'Our customers have told us that they would love to do more gardening, but the cost and sometimes the lack of experience really puts them off. We know that the introduction of this new range and with Charlie’s expertise, it will help encourage more people to take up gardening which is both affordable and enjoyable'.
