Amazon announced it has launched Amazon Pharmacy, a new store allowing customers to purchase prescription medications on Amazon’s website or app for delivery.
Amazon Pharmacy allows customers to complete pharmacy transactions online, with the aim of offering a convenient solution. Prime members receive free two-day delivery from the pharmacy store. Amazon also said Prime members paying without insurance can access savings of up to 80% on generic medicines and 40% on brand name medications. Savings are available when ordering online at Amazon Pharmacy or at 50,000 other participating pharmacies across the US.
TJ Parker, Vice President Amazon Pharmacy, said: “We designed Amazon Pharmacy to put customers first – bringing Amazon’s customer obsession to an industry that can be inconvenient and confusing. We work hard behind the scenes to handle complications seamlessly so anyone who needs a prescription can understand their options, place their order for the lowest available price, and have their medication delivered quickly.”
Expansion into healthcare
Amazon continues to develop its healthcare proposition. In 2018, Amazon acquired PillPack, an online pharmacy. It also launched its own healthcare programme in 2019, currently being trialled with employees and giving them virtual services such as in-app visits with doctors and nurses. In July 2020, Amazon announced it is opening health care centres located near its fulfilment centres across the US for employees.
Adding healthcare to the ecosystem, will help build trust, loyalty, and drive frequent visits to the website. The notion is that Amazon offers everything a customer would need in one place, meaning they would not have to look to other retailers to fulfil their needs. This is the start of a long-term strategy, as well as enabling convenient purchases, we can see Amazon offering expert advice through digital devices, such as in-app video consultations.
