Airport showcases first stores featuring Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ technology

Date : 04 January 2021

Having announced the partnership last March, Hospitality group, OTG, has opened its first CIBO Express Gourmet Market convenience stores featuring Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ technology.

Two stores launched at Newark airport

The CIBO Express stores at Newark Airport, New York, are the first two stores to be developed as part of the partnership between OTG and Amazon. Located at Terminal C, the stores are equipped with the technology which Amazon has showcased at its Amazon Go and larger format, Amazon Go Grocery, stores.

Accessed by credit card

Customers gain access to the store by swiping their credit card. They shop the store as they would in a conventional store but can walk out without any further scanning or checking of their purchases. The company is looking to develop an alternative access method for customers without a credit card. Customer hosts are currently also available to help new users adopt the technology.

Contactless solutions on the rise

As in the Amazon Go concept, the technology enabling this experience is highly visible, with a network of ceiling mounted cameras and shelf sensors. OTG plans to expand the technology to other airport locations. The successful adoption of Amazon’s technology by another operator is likely to lead to further interest in licensing the technology, especially given the acceleration of contactless solutions since the start of the pandemic. This could help to accelerate the use of a technology which, while it is often featured and discussed within the sector, remains relatively rare in terms of its use.
