In China, Lawson will join with Alibaba in selling tickets for Japanese museums and other tourist attractions by the end of this month.
How it will work and why...
Japanese ticket-selling site, Lawson HMW entertainment will collaborate with Alibaba's travel booking site, Fliggy, in allowing users to purchase tickets to attractions such as Japanese aquariums and art museums. Customers will be able to purchase tickets in Chinese through Fliggy, then pick them up at terminals in Lawson stores in Japan. This service should increase customer traffic to both online and physical stores and overcome potential language barriers.
This is not the first time that Lawson has looked to capitalise on strong Chinese tourist numbers in Japan. Lawson was the first convenience store in Japan to accept Alipay at all its outlets. During July and August, Lawson allowed Alipay users to redeem loyalty points through purchases in Lawson outlets in both Japan and China. It will interesting to see whether there will be further alliances between the two retailers in the future.
