El Corte Inglés and Alibaba partner

Date : 30 November 2018

El Corte Inglés and Alibaba to collaborate on retail, distribution, cloud computing services, digital initiatives and mobile payment solutions. El Corte Inglés has a strategic focus on digitalisation and upgraded its online offer in 2018.

A global, digital agreement

The main aim of the agreement is to enhance both companies’ omnichannel offers, improving links between online and offline.

Spain-based El Corte Inglés will be able to sell its products on Alibaba’s business-to-consumer (B2C) platforms, including Tmall and AliExpress. This gives the Spanish retailer great access to the Chinese market. It will sell private label and branded goods on the platform, although the types of products to be sold has not been mentioned.

El Corte Inglés also has the opportunity to use Alibaba’s Cloud technology, facilitating big data analysis, and providing AI tools to help personalise retail services. Earlier this year, the Spanish company also signed a deal to use the Alipay mobile platform, allowing Chinese tourists an easy and safe means of payment in its department stores.

In the offline realm, AliExpress will open ‘corners’ and other physical spaces in El Corte Inglés shopping centres, creating new shopping experiences. Alibaba will benefit from this physical retail space, and use it to setup physical collection points for online orders from AliExpress. Earlier in 2018, this store-in-store concept was tested when an AliExpress pop up opened in a Madrid department store.

A strong proposition for customers

CEO of El Corte Inglés, Víctor del Pozo said that Alibaba’s technology will allow the physical world to be united with the offline world, offering an improved retail experience for shoppers. Rodrigo Cipriani Foresio, director of Alibaba group for Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece, said that consumers around the world, particularly in China, will have access to more products and services, with unique value and opportunities generated from their collaboration.
