The ecommerce giant is to have 100 Hema stores in China by December 2018.
Nine more stores
Hema CEO Hou Yi said the group plans to open nine more stores by 12th December. The focus is on expansion in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities in China, including Shanghai, Beijing, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Guiyang. Currently, it operates 91 stores.
According to Alibaba, Hema stores outperform traditional ones by five times. It is an example of Alibaba’s “New Retail” model, which merges online and offline retail. It provides a new retail experience that uses technology-driven concept for in-store purchases, online delivery and in-store consumption. Shoppers use an app to scan products to get product inforamtion and pay for their shoppings. Those living within a three kilometer radius can have their goods delivered within 30 minutes. At Hema’s robotic restaurant in Shanghai (Robot.He), customers are served by robots that deliver dishes right to their table.
