Albertsons, the third-largest food retailer in the US, has rolled-out a new contactless payment tool across its store network.
Albertsons Pay has been launched within the retailer’s just for U loyalty app. It provides shoppers with a safe, secure and contactless way for shoppers to pay in-store. They can also apply discounts and earn rewards within the app. It has been rolled-out to all banners including Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, Star-Market, Acme, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, and Carrs.

How it works
Through the just for U app, customers can choose one of two contactless pay options. With Albertsons Direct, they can pay directly through their bank, while Albertsons Cash is a stored value account that can be pre-loaded and used across the retailer’s stores. After setup, customers show the QR code in their just for U app at checkout to apply their discounts, earn rewards, and securely pay for their groceries.
Several other retailers have launched contactless payment models over recent years. These include Walmart Pay, Target Wallet, Amazon Pay and CVS Pay. This reflects the push towards digital payments across the market, including Apple Pay and Google Pay. The drive from Albertsons with this roll-out comes as retailers look to offer more contactless solutions. This month Albertsons has started to pilot contactless lockers for grocery ecommerce pickup, while Walmart is testing a robotic smoothie maker at a store in California.
