Albertsons, the second-largest supermarket operator in the US, has appointed Vivek Sankaran as president and CEO, effective April 25, 2019. He joins the retailer from PepsiCo, where he currently serves as CEO, PepsiCo Foods North America. Jim Donald, currently the company’s president and CEO, will continue as co-chairman of the Board, with Leonard Laufer serving as the other co-chairman.

Sharpened focus on the intersection of technology and service

Donald was appointed as president and CEO last September, having joined the retailer as president and COO six months earlier. Donald has held senior leadership positions across a range of organisations including Starbucks where he served as president and CEO. Under his leadership, the company has sharpened its focus on the intersection of technology and service, launching and extending a range of ecommerce-led programmes. Commenting on the appointment of Vivek Sankaran, Donald stated,

”Vivek brings a rare blend of CPG, retail, manufacturing, logistics, technology, and research and development to Albertsons Companies, all of which are key components to being a successful retailer in an Omni Channel-driven environment. Moreover, Vivek has the keen understanding that the front line is directly linked to the bottom line, and I'm confident he will inspire and engage our 270,000 associates across our stores, support offices, manufacturing facilities, and distribution centers.”

Ecommerce and store investments

Sankaran will look to build on the foundation that Donald, and former CEO Bob Miller, have established in creating the second-largest supermarket operator in the US. Under the new leadership we expect to see a continuation of its ecommerce initiatives, including its marketplace programme. The retailer will also drive new store developments as it builds out its range of differentiated formats encompassing mainstream, premium and ultra-premium propositions.
