Pyaterochka launched its first staffless #naletu (On the Fly) store in Moscow in October 2020. Also, following the pilot concept’s trial, the retailer plans to launch several similar projects in other districts in the capital.

Smallest store in the X5 network

The store stocks 900 SKUs in 80 sq. m. of selling space and has a fully automated checkout system. To use the store shoppers must download the #naletu app, and log in with their X5 ID. The app generates a dynamic QR code, which allows the shopper to enter the store, at any time between 07:00 and midnight, seven days a week.

One staff member is available in-store, and they are focused on replenishing the store from the nearest regular Pyaterochka store. Upon expanding the network of staffless stores, each regular store acts as a distribution hub.

X5 Lab Next Gen retail tech used in-store

Much of the technology used in-store was developed in-house via the X5 Lab. This is part of the group’s five-year investment plan to develop and roll out next generation technology throughout its network.

The main technology used in the store is a system of intelligent cameras and sensors that places a product in the shoppers’ basket when they pick up and remove it or when it is placed back on the shelf. The system can monitor all those present in-store simultaneously and in real time.

Automated and centralised systems aid safe and good shopping

The sensors help to ensure social distancing and shoppers’ safety by only allowing a set number to enter at any given time. Electronic shelf labels are connected online and automate and centralise the quick and remote updating of pricing data. This also allows the prices of fresh food and food-to-go to be discounted throughout the day, to help with the retailer’s aim to reduce food wastage.

Omnichannel path to payment

The #naletu store uses X5's own Express Scan technology, which enables app users to pay by using a bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. They are also offered the option to pay at a self-service checkout.

Store targets younger shoppers

The store aims to address a new generation of shoppers who prefer to make quick and contactless purchases in nearby stores. The product offering is geared towards consumers living in urban areas and looking for maximum convenience. They will gain access to a curated selection of products that target their top-up and food-to-go shopping needs.
