X5 to develop convenience chain in Ukraine

Date : 28 February 2013

Russian retailer, X5 Retail Group, is planning to develop its Perekrestok Express format in Ukraine.

Focusing on the Kiev region

Having operated in Ukraine since 2004, the company is looking to expand its store portfolio which is currently at 10 stores. Dmitry Smirnov, General Director of X5 in Ukraine, has stated that X5 is due to open the first two stores in Kiev this year as a trial format in the country, and will then focus its expansion plans for the country in Kiev and the Kiev Province.

Real estate a factor

It is thought that X5 has chosen to expand its convenience format because of the availability of space to accommodate smaller stores. Previous expansion efforts have been thwarted by not being able to acquire the necessary amount of land for supermarkets.
