Woolworths SA appoints new chief executive

Date : 15 January 2020

South Africa-based Woolworths has appointed a new chief executive, Roy Enzo Bagattini. He will take charge of the company from February 2020.

New chief executive joins from Levi Strauss

Bagattini is presently executive vice president and president for Levi Strauss Americas. He oversees operations that generate about US$3.0 bn in revenues, which is about half of what Woolworths Holdings does.

Discussing his appointment, Bagattini said: “I am excited about the tremendous potential of the Group and am looking forward to working with our talented and passionate people to elevate our brands, build deeper connections with our customers and, in doing so, realise this potential across all our businesses.

Turning around Australia to be key focus

In a trading update in November 2019 the retailer said group sales rose 2.2%, and by 2.9% in constant currency terms, during the 20-week period ending 11 November. In its home market it said food sales increased by 8.8%, with comparable sales up by 6.5%. However, it continued to face challenges in Australia, which is likely to be Bagattini’s focus in the short term.
