Scoping the best stores in over 40 countries

Over the last 12 months, our team of analysts have visited over 40 countries. Based on these visits and recently opened stores, we have compiled our list of the top 16 stores you should visit in 2019. Our visits have revealed a growing role for technology in customer facing areas, while also underpinning a true omnichannel experience. Several retailers have created live retail labs, two of which are featured in our top 16.

Retailers also continue to deliver experiential store formats, creating immersive, design-led experiences. This is a key part of their strategy to differentiate and bring to life the social component of grocery shopping. We highlight three of our picks from Asia, Europe and North America.

Asia: habitat by honestbee, Singapore

This is the first physical retail store opened by honestbee, an online grocery and food delivery service operating across eight Asian countries. The store is a unique blend of supermarket, specialty grocer and in-store dining. It features new-generation retail technology including the world’s first automatic, cashless checkout system and robotic collection point. The retailer will use the habitat banner to extend its brand throughout Asia, while also using the space as an innovation lab to develop new retail concepts and solutions.

Europe: Le 4 Casino, Paris

Le 4 Casino has been created by Casino in conjunction with its long-standing franchisee Prodistribution. The format in its entirety is unlikely to be rolled out extensively. However, its digital innovations and the way it engages shoppers could be used to enhance its stores throughout France. Le 4 Casino meets the retailer’s core aims of building a multi-format, multi-banner business model, adapted to current shopper trends that has a multi-channel position at its core.

North America: New Seasons Market, Seattle

New Seasons Market operates as a neighbourhood grocer, placing a strong emphasis on fresh, organic and locally sourced ranges. This store represents the latest vision for the brand. It places an enhanced focus on fresh foods, organics and local sourcing. The store features an outstanding food-to-go offer, including café and wine bar, with its outdoor patio popular with shoppers in this urban setting.
