Tesco and YO! Sushi trial new partnership

Date : 11 October 2018

YO! Sushi will open a manned kiosk in two Tesco Extra stores, in the latest of a growing wave of tie-ups between retailers and food-to-go and foodservice operators.

Manned kiosks, delivering in-store preparation

The first trial, in Sunbury-on-Thames, has opened this week. It will be followed by a second counter in the Bournemouth Extra next week. In addition to the in-store counter, YO! Sushi products will also be available to grab-and-go at the front of the store.

This is the first time YO! To Go products have been made available outside YO!'s 74 restaurants.  The company see the move as an important step in maximising value from its acquisition of supermarket sushi supplier Taiko Foods in April this year.

Builds on a growing partnership trend for sushi

Sushi is a specialist food-to-go product which has grown rapidly in popularity in the UK recent years. Tesco is the latest major supermarket retailer to develop its sushi offer by partnering with a specialist operator.   M&S opened its first in-store counter with sushi specialist Wasabi in October 2017 and now has five stores trialling the concept; Sushi Gourmet and Sushi Daily specialise in creating sushi counter concessions in retail stores and their partners include Sainsbury's and Waitrose in the UK, as well as many other major retailers across Europe.

Partnering with sushi specialists offer retailers an easy, credibly branded, premium positioned solution which brings theatre into stores, creating another reason for shoppers to visit.

Fits into a growing wave of collaboration and partnerships in the wider food sector

Partnerships between retailers and specialist operators in food-to-go is a trend we have seen building over the past 12-18 months and we foresee further potential for growth.  Food-to-go operators with experience of operating across multiple sites, such as YO! Sushi, are perhaps best placed to take advantage of retailers' ambitions to evolve their food-to-go offer.  The variety and breadth of partnerships will continue to evolve – expect more new and intriguing partnerships to be launched in the next 12 months.
