GPA has reported a gross sales increase of 9.7% in Q1 2013, vs Q1 2012, driven by same-store sales growth of 6.6% and 25 new store openings.
Same-store sales were highlight
GPA drew out the same-store sales performance of Assaí, Minimercado Extra and Ponto Frio as an "outstanding" highlight of the quarter. Assaí and Minimercado Extra outperformed the group average, reaching double digit growth. For the food business, gross same-store sales were up 6.4%, against a strong comparison base of +9.3% in Q1 2012. The timing of Easter had a positive effect, as the full sales period was concentrated in Q1, compared to only part of it in 2012.
Marketing efforts boost Viavarejo sales
Gross sales revenue for the non-food business was up 8.7% over Q1 2012, although this was boosted by inflation in some categories. An increased focus on marketing helped drive same-store sales growth of 6.8%. The Extra website has seen the start of the Marketplace campaign, which will boost the assortment of products offered. Intensive promotions continue in e-commerce operations, continuing the trend begun in 2012.
GPA will release Q1 earnings on 29 April.
