We round up the latest news from the Netherlands as Jumbo and La Place unveil a new concept store, PLUS launches express delivery and Albert Heijn offers specialty meat dishes. Elsewhere, retailers are adapting ranges and promotions to tackle food waste.

Jumbo and La Place unveil new concept…

Having acquired La Place last year, Jumbo is opening a new concept, ‘Food Markt City by Jumbo’ in Groningen.

According to Ralph Bertrand, Director of Formula at Jumbo, shoppers can expect a wide range of freshly prepared products including 'sushi, pizza, sandwiches and bakery … In front is a range of ultra fresh products, such as meals, yogurts and juices’.

Bart van den Nieuwenhof, Managing Director at La Place said, ‘In addition, there are La Place products [such] as sausage rolls, pastries and freshly ground coffee’. The new concept will also offer home delivery, as well as self-checkouts.

…PLUS launches PLUS Express in 110 stores

PLUS is introducing PLUS Express, where online shoppers can receive same day delivery within two hours. The development follows a trial in July in four stores. To benefit from the service, users are charged €2.50, in addition to the standard delivery fee of €8.50.

The retailer is raising awareness through a comprehensive campaign online and social media channels, as well as on television and radio.

Albert Heijn introduces regional meats

Elsewhere in the market, Albert Heijn is now offering a range of popular regional meat products under the ‘Streeckgenoten’ label in stores in Limburg, Brabant and Zeeland, as well as online. Later this year, the retailer plans to extend this to other Dutch regions.

Jumbo launches ketchup range that minimises waste…

Meanwhile, Jumbo is partnering with Waste Factory, introducing a range of three new tomato ketchups, to minimise tomato waste in the supply chain. The new flavours include tomato, curry and barbecue ketchups, which also offer less sugar and salt than existing products. The products, originated in the Jumbo Innovation Lab, with the launch timely for the summer barbecue season.

…As Coop Netherlands offers waste-inspired promotion

In related news, Coop Netherlands has introduced a collectable promotion, in partnership with tupperware brand Lock & Lock to help minimise food waste. Shoppers receive a stamp for each transaction of €5 or more in-store or online and can collect bonus stamps for purchasing from a specific range of promotional products. When fifteen stamps have been collected, these can be redeemed for one of seven different Lock & Lock tupperware boxes.
