As Metro Cash & Carry establishes a transition team as its chief executive prepares to step down at the end of the year and launches a new service, we round up news from the retailer.

Metro establishes CEO transition team

During the transition period after existing CEO, Olaf Koch, leaves, Metro has confirmed that its CFO, Christian Baier, and COO, Rafael Gasset, will jointly assume the position of CEO as it searches for a new chief executive. Koch will step down from his role as chief executive at the end of 2020, 14 months before his contract was set to end, which has led to the new structure to be put in place.

Commenting on the step, Metro’s chairman, Jürgen Steinemann, said: “The Supervisory Board has every confidence in entrusting Christian Baier and Rafael Gasset with the role as co-CEOs of Metro. Both combine proven financial expertise as well as long-standing operational wholesale experience.”.

Metro offers restaurateurs free delivery in Germany

Metro’s digital unit, Hospitality Digital, is to collaborate with Google to launch a new delivery service. The solution aims to support restaurateurs in their digital transformation, both through the development of digital solutions and partnerships. The service will integrate elements of Google Search and Google Maps, to enable Hospitality Digital to offer restaurateurs the opportunity to sell products as take-away or for delivery, without involving other service providers.

The need for the service comes after Metro identified that restaurants in Germany paid between 14% and 30% of their turnover for delivery services, while this rose to 50% in some European countries. Metro said for restaurants in Germany that have signed up to the solution, they had seen an average increase in orders in first month of 11%.

Metro spins off food start-up NX-Food as independent company

Metro has spun off its food start-up hub NX-Food as an independent company to enable the latter company to provide services to clients outside Metro. Metro also said that being an independent company would enable NX-Food to build its presence and name as a consultancy for food innovation more widely.
