Les Mousquetaires announced full year 2020 results showing revenue, including fuel, rose 2.3% to €46.3 bn. Underlining how shoppers adapted their buying behaviour in response to COVID-19 and restrictions and lockdowns implemented as a result, Les Mousquetaires with proximity formats outperforming.
Strong difference in performance by format
Les Mousquetaires reported its food retailing business generated sales of €37.8 bn across its operations in Belgium, France, Poland, and Portugal. In its home market, its Intermarché banner saw growth of 1.4%, to €32.5 bn, although this was strongly affected by a fall in fuel sales, which offset a strong increase in food sales.
By format, the retailer said performance had differed strongly between channels, underlining the importance of a multichannel strategy. Les Mousquetaires reported sales increased 22.8% at its Express banner, +1.4% at Contact, +1.2% at its supermarkets, which combated the -0.4% fall in sales at its hypermarkets. Highlighting the effect of falling fuel sales on its performance, Les Mousquetaires said sales at its Netto banner, which only generates a limited amount from fuel, saw sales rise 7.3% to €1.4 bn.
Strong growth in online
Online, which included sales at both its Drives and for home delivery, exceeded the €1.0 bn mark. The retailer ended 2020 with a network of 1.495 Drives, while also highlighting that the launch of a delivery option had helped it to reach new shoppers.
Les Mousquetaires ends 2020 with nearly 2,700 food-focused stores
Les Mousquetaires ended 2020 operating 3,969 stores across all its banners, with nearly 2,700 of these being food-focused. Of the 3,969 stores, 3,193 were in France and 776 outside of the market. Its Intermarché banner finished the year with 2,369 stores, of which 1,840 were in France, 78 in Belgium, 197 in Poland, and 254 in Portugal. All 302 Netto stores were in France.
Agromousquetaires sees revenue increase
Its Agromousquetaires division saw revenue rise 2.3% to €4.2 bn. The division ended the year with 59 production facilities in France. Agromousquetaires supports the independence of the wider group and helps its stores remain differentiated on a local level by working with nearby small and medium sized producers.
