M&S is set to open its first airside M&S Food to Go in partnership with SSP, a leading operator of food and beverage outlets in travel locations worldwide. The store will be located in Birmingham Airport.
A key UK travel location
The new Food to Go store will open at Birmingham Airport, which serves 13 million passengers a year, in early 2019.
The store offers food and drink products across all day parts including wholesome wraps, freshly made baguettes, salads, sushi, smoothies, confectionary, beers and wines. Additionally, a range of hot food will also be available including bacon rolls, hot sandwiches and soups. The store will also have a M&S coffee and hot drinks offer, made by specially trained baristas.
Sacha Berendji, Retail, Operations and Property Director at M&S said, “We’re excited to be opening in Birmingham Airport early next year. This is a great opportunity to continue to grow in travel locations where we know customers love the convenience of our offer. From sushi to salads, our Food to Go will have a tailored range of quality products for customers to enjoy before they board or on their flight”.
Bringing together food innovation and operational expertise
As the first airside Food to Go store, this is a significant step for M&S and SSP’s partnership. The two companies have been working together since 2001, when the first M&S Simply Food store was opened in London's Liverpool street.
Kate Swann, CEO of SSP Group, said: “Bringing together M&S’s food innovation and SSP’s operational expertise, the new store has been designed for airport customers. We’ve worked closely with the development team at M&S to create an offering that will appeal to people flying through Birmingham Airport looking for quick, delicious meals and snacks to eat in or to take with them on their flights”.
Kate Swann to step down
SSP has announced that CEO, Kate Swann will step down next year. Swann will leave at the end of May 2019, and will be succeeded by Simon Smith, who is currently chief executive of the group's UK and Ireland business.
Vagn Sørensen, SSPs Group’s chairman, commented “In the past five years, Kate has transformed SSP into an industry-leading food travel retail business, which has grown significantly around the world, and she has generated significant returns for our shareholders. Simon’s strong leadership skills combined with his considerable experience in the food travel and retail space, as well as his track record at SSP, make him well placed to lead SSP to continued future success".
