As well as offering delivery from convenience stores, on-demand restaurant delivery company, DoorDash, has launched dark convenience stores in the US, according to reports from Medium.com/HNGRY.
Delivery of over 2,000 items
DoorDash’s dark stores are used to fulfil pickup and delivery orders and, according to the report, are operating under “The Convenience Store” brand. Customers can choose from a range of more than 2,000 items, with free delivery in less than 30 minutes. The company is operating six dark stores in Redwood City, Columbus, Dallas, Minneapolis, Phoenix, and Chicago. They range from 5,600-11,000 sq. ft. warehouses.
This follows the news in April that DoorDash is partnering with several national and regional convenience store chains, including 7-Eleven, Wawa, Casey’s General Store, and Circle K. The partnership extends to around 1,800 convenience stores across the US with additional locations being added daily. Many of these companies also have extensive foodservice operations which DoorDash will be able to support through its core capabilities. The launch was accerlerated as the demand for online deliveries grew at pace due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
DoorDash is not the first delivery company to launch dark stores. For example, Spain-based food delivery company Glovo launched convenience grocery delivery in 2018 in Madrid. The company now operates seven dark stores across Europe and Latin America. Locations include Madrid, Barcelona, Lima, and Buenos Aires. In the UK, Deliveroo operates 14 ‘dark site’ convenience stores in London, Manchester, Brighton, Leeds, Reading, Nottingham and Cambridge.
