Ecommerce specialist, Jumia, has implemented several initiatives to help the community during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Nigeria: donating masks
Jumia will donate certified face masks to Health Ministries in Kenya, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Nigeria, and Uganda. Using its access to a supply network outside of Africa, the retailer is coordinating and distributing face masks across healthcare facilities and workers, using its last-Mile delivery solutions. It will also collaborate with ministries to use its online platform to share COVID-19 related public service announcements.
Lagos partners with Jumia on #MyHandsAreSafe campaign
The Lagos State Government has launched a handwashing challenge with Jumia, aimed at encouraging regular handwashing to contain the spread of COVID-19. The campaign, #MyHandsAreSafe, is intended to teach residents correct handwashing procedures according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Lagos health authorities. The campaign is an effort to use an online viral challenge towards minimising the spread of disease.
“Stay Safe” campaign
Moreover, the retailer has added the “Stay Safe” campaign to its website, offering specific hygienic products at the lowest possible prices by waiving commissions
- Jumia has partnered with manufacturers like Reckitt Benckiser to distribute sanitary products, such as soap, disinfectants and liquid hand wash
- It has also partnered with Procter & Gamble (P&G) to provide sanitary products to Nigerians during the lockdown. Shoppers can make orders from a range of P&G products and have them delivered via its contactless delivery service
- A partnership with Coca-Cola is also enabling shoppers to enjoy discounts and free shipping on selected products
Kenya: reducing collection fees
Meanwhile, Jumia has partnered with the Postal Corporation of Kenya, Posta Kenya, to reduce its collection fee to KES116 (USD $1.10). The service is available to consumers outside Nairobi, enabling them to collect orders from postal stores. “At cost” last-mile delivery will be available on essential products such as food and hygiene items. In addition, buckets of clean water and soap will be available at collection stations to ensure proper hygiene.
Implementing contactless delivery
The retailer has added contactless delivery for prepaid packages through its JumiaPay platform. Shoppers can purchase products online then have them delivered without contact or cash being exchanged. Delivery agents have been instructed to call or text when at a shopper’s home, drop the product on the doorstep, then step back and wait for the shopper to take the package. This adds convenience, social distancing and cashless measures into one solution. Additionally, to encourage cashless and prepaid transactions, Jumia has reduced its fees on JumiaPay, offering discounts as an incentive for shoppers who use the service.
Jumia partners with Twiga for food delivery
- Jumia has signed a distribution deal with Twiga Foods to deliver fresh food
- Several prepacked kits have been created by the retailer that include fresh produce and non-perishable foods
- Prices will be 50% less than supermarket prices. The Freshi Bundle, which is expected to be most popular, will offer 28kg of food for KES1,925 (US$18.40)
- Twiga will source directly from farmers and FMCG manufactures, reducing the need for further steps in the supply chain
- Shoppers in Nairobi will receive free same-day delivery
More initiatives to support the community
- Jumia has increased its hygiene and sanitary standards by checking employees’ body temperatures, sanitising facilities and surfaces and using masks and gloves while handling and delivering orders
- It will deliver free meals to first responders and health workers in Morocco and Tunisia through its food platform
- It has established a solidarity fund, #JumiaHeroes, for frontline staff carrying out essential duties in warehouses and delivery hubs. The fund is made from voluntary and confidential contributions by employees
- The two co-CEOs and co-Founders of Jumia, Jeremy Hodara and Sacha Poignonnec, have cut their respective salaries by 25% during the pandemic
