Amazon launches kiosks in UK train stations

Date : 06 June 2019

Amazon is rolling out physical kiosks in train stations throughout London that will sell a rotating range of products.

Extension of Amazon Treasure Truck

The kiosks are an extension of Amazon’s Treasure Truck concept, that launched in the UK in 2017. Treasure Truck features one item at a time, and customers can sign up to the receive a text notification to let them know when the truck will be in the area. Customers can then pre-order the product to collect from the truck. Products on offer range from food and drink items to trending technology.  The concept is currently available throughout the UK in London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, York, Coventry, Southampton, Portsmouth, Windsor, Reading, Maidenhead and Slough.

Similar to Treasure Truck, customers will be able to pick up a changing range of products from Amazon’s new kiosks at discounted prices. The kiosks will initially be rolled out to London Bridge, Paddington, Liverpool Street, King’s Cross and Charing Cross rail stations across London.

The move follows Amazon’s announcement that it will be opening 10 “clicks and mortar” stores across the UK, selling everything from homeware and health and beauty to food and drink and electronics for 100 of its third-party online sellers.

Enhancing physical presence

Due to the locations with high footfall throughout the day, the kiosks provide the opportunity for increased advertising for the Amazon brand, keeping it in the minds of customers. Situating the kiosks in rail stations also provides Amazon customers with convenient locations for them to buy products on their way in to or home from the office, reducing the need to carry items around for long periods of time.

In our Strategic outlook for Amazon report, we highlight that increasing its physical presence is a priority for Amazon, and kiosks are another example of how the retailer is targeting this priority. We have seen Amazon’s physical presence come to life through its checkout free store, Amazon Go, the roll out of Amazon Prime Now from Whole Foods stores, as well as the roll out of Amazon 4-Star.
