Spain: 2019 results and developments

DIA has appointed Ricardo Alvarez Elena is the new CEO of DIA Spain. Separately, Uvesco Group has announced solid 2019 results, while setting out its 2020 plans. GM Food reveals it reached a 2019 expansion record, while discussing its own initiatives for 2020. Meanwhile, Froiz announces its 2019 results, with a 3.5% sales growth and eight new stores.

DIA Spain appoints new CEO

The DIA Group has appointed Ricardo Alverez Elena as CEO of DIA Spain, replacing Karl-Heinz Holland who temporarily held the position since October. Alverez has experience working in the Tesco sales team in Ireland and Lidl as the executive vice president and operations management in Spain and the United States.

DIA’s objectives remain focused on growing throughout Spain, Karl-Heinz Holland stated. The latter said that with Alverez’s support, experience and leadership, DIA will accelerate its change process. Alverez says his aim is to make DIA the preferred shopper’s choice in Spain and to offer shoppers the best service.

Uvesco Group announces positive 2019 results…

Uvesco Group has revealed its turnover reached €773m in 2019, an increase of 4.5% compared to 2018. Uvesco opened 20 new stores in 2019, under the BM and Super Amara banners.

Uvesco has announced its plans to invest €39m to open nine BM supermarkets and to complete the renovation and improvement of existing stores. The Group has set a target of increasing its turnover by 7.4%, to €830m, at the end of 2020.

…And reveals its sustainability commitments

Uvesco also said it plans to get 100% of its electricity from renewable energy sources, with a partnership formed with Iberdrola. Furthermore, the Group announced it donated 284 tonnes of food to foodbanks in 2019. Uvesco has also committed to removing all single-use plastic bags and replace them with recycled plastic bags, by March 2020.   

GM Food announces expansion record…

GM Food announced it reached a record expansion in 2019, opening 112 franchised stores. 57 of the franchised stores opened as Proxim, 50 stores opened under the Suma banner and five opened under Spar. The expansion occurred across Spain including; Andalusia, Catalonia, Canary Islands, Madrid and other provinces.

…And sets out 2020 development plans

GM plans to continue its expansion plans in the year ahead. In January 2020 it opened eight franchised stores. The eight stores opened in Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Castile and León and Galicia.

Froiz announces positive 2019 results

Froiz has revealed it invoiced €680m in 2019, sales growth of 3.5%. The group opened four stores, taking its total to 252 at the end of 2019. The company claimed the increase in sales was due to high levels of staff training and the subsequent positive effect it has had on shopper engagement.
