Coronavirus (COVID-19): Home Bargains expands food box offering

Variety discounter Home Bargains has expanded its online food box offering, with four options now available to shoppers.

The retailer has added a personal care, baking and confectionery box to its online offering.

Essentials Food Box

The retailer launched its essentials food box in late April. The box costs £23.99, including the delivery charge. It contains 25 products including bread, rice, canned goods, milk and toilet roll. Boxes are limited to one per customer. This is a strong value proposition for shoppers on a budget.

Before the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak we were increasingly seeing variety discounters enhancing their food offering. Although this new initiative is not an enhancement, it helps Home Bargains to be recognised for its grocery range. The retailer already offers a selection of ambient grocery online, with a focus on larger pack sizes.

Other food box offerings

Other retailers have also launched food boxes to support vulnerable shoppers and those self-isolating;

  • Aldi launched its essentials food box last week, for £24.99 shoppers receive 22 products including tea, pasta and antibacterial handwash
  • Morrisons recently added a Ramadan variant to its recently launched food box range, including products such as dates and chicken breasts. The box will be available in time for the start of Ramadan observance on Thursday. The retailer expects to increase production of all its food boxes to around 200,000 per week over the coming weeks
  • M&S has also introduced a food box for £35. The essentials box contains pasta, tinned food and toilet roll
