Spain store visits

Our store visit reports feature floor plans, store photos and full commentary written by our team of international retail experts. Dozens of reports are made every year of stores that feature new concepts in food and grocery retail.

Following decades of a hard discount strategy, Aldi Nord may soften its discount concept in the future.  This store we visited has been recently refurbished. It has a new store layout, with better signage across the store, and offers a wide range of organic products.

We visited this Eroski store in the upscale Salamanca district of Madrid to understand how the retailer’s franchised neighbourhood store model is enabling it to drive growth with a proximity format in Spain.

During our day with Makro we visited two Madrid stores to see how the business is focusing on fresh and premium ranges and to understand the steps it is taking to tailor its products and services to the HoReCa trade.
During our day with El Corte Inglés, we visited three of its stores in Madrid, to understand how the retailer is building on its strengths in quality, while becoming more price competitive and developing new services.
We’ve been in-store in Madrid to see how Auchan is evolving its Spanish hypermarket
We go in-store at Lidl to see how the discounter is developing more supermarket characteristics in Spain.
Costco’s store in Seville, Spain is its first in continental Europe. We review how the retailer is bringing its strength in fresh meat, food and produce, meal solutions and depth in non-food to enable it to differentiate itself from rivals in this competitive market.
We visited Spanish discounter DIA’s health & beauty fascia Clarel, a format which complements its core grocery network. Targeted at middle-income consumers, the format is constantly evolving. DIA’s aim is for Clarel to become the benchmark in Iberia for shoppers looking to buy health, beauty, household, baby, personal care and pet care products.
We spent a day with the DIA team in Madrid, visiting one of the company’s core store formats, DIA Market, and the innovative produce-focused Fresh by DIA, to see how DIA is strengthening its proximity profile in Spain.

Caprabo’s flagship store in Barcelona is located in the L’Illa Diagonal shopping centre. IGD visited this store in May 2011.
