We round up the latest news from SPAR International with a focus on store openings in the Netherlands, Australia & Oman.
SPAR Netherlands: convenience drive
SPAR Netherlands is launching three SPAR City stores in Amersfoort, the Hague and Leeuwarden later this month. These new openings represent a phase of expansion for SPAR City, which aims to grow its store count from 35 stores to 50 stores by the end of 2017. The first SPAR City store launched in 2010 in Rotterdam, while SPAR Netherlands believes there is potential to operate over 100 SPAR City stores in the country.
The format looks to meet the needs of food to go shoppers, with a range focused on sandwiches, smoothies, coffee and cake, as well as a smaller core grocery offer.
Commenting on the development, Sjaak Kranendonk, general manager, said, 'With the opening of these three City stores and what we are planning to open, we are well on schedule'.
SPAR Australia: store refurbishment
Elsewhere, SPAR Australia has opened two newly converted stores on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. These stores have an emphasis on excellence across a range of fresh and ambient categories, as well as at a dedicated meat counter. The retailer has also introduced targeted promotions to win over local shoppers.
SPAR Oman: forecourt opening
In other news, SPAR Oman has opened a new SPAR Express store store at an al Maha petrol forecourt, adjacent to the al Khous-Sultan Qaboos University. More broadly, a wider partnership with al Maha will see 15 forecourt stores converted to SPAR Express in 2017 .
SPAR opened its first store in Oman in 2015, while SPAR reported that turnover in the Sultanate reached €18m in 2016, an increase of 193%.
