We round up the latest news from SPAR International partners in the Netherlands, Slovenia, Gran Canaria and Sri Lanka.

The Netherlands opens its 150th SPAR Express store

The 150th store is located in Eemnes, in the province of Ultrecht. It caters to quick, convenience shopper missions by offering a range of freshly prepared sandwiches, pizzas, pancakes as well as smoothies and yoghurts.

Since opening the first SPAR Express forecourt store in 2017, on average, SPAR has rolled out two stores a week in the Netherlands. The retailer aims to continue expanding, with an additional 50 store openings planned. The stores will be at Texaco and Esso forecourts along the country’s motorways and in small towns and major cities.

Slovenia launches its fourth Start it up, Slovenia! campaign

Meanwhile in Slovenia, SPAR has launched the fourth edition of its Start it up, Slovenia! campaign. The initiative sees local entrepreneurs compete to win an exclusive long-term contract to sell their products in SPAR stores. Slovenia’s most popular TV channel, POP TV, will air news from the competition every Sunday evening, until December 2019.

This year, eight young entrepreneurs are involved, and their products are available in all INTERSPAR Hypermarkets nationwide. The product range comprises a 100% vegetable burger, an educational jigsaw puzzle and a magnesium cream with essential oils, among others. The winner is decided based on the highest number of sales.

Since its launch in 2016, the competition has helped develop 80 new products. It also creates opportunities for international uptake of the products. Last year winners, the creators of La Popsi frozen dessert popsicle, have signed a deal with SPAR Austria. From January 2020, their products will be sold in over 1,000 SPAR stores across Austria.

Gran Canaria invests €5.5m in new fruit and vegetable distribution centre

In other news, SPAR Gran Canaria has invested €5.5m (US$6m) in a new distribution centre (DC) in Mercalaspalmas. The DC will “enhance the quality of products and optimise processes that will improve the standard of fresh produce being supplied to SPAR stores”.

The DC will increase SPAR Gran Canaria’s supply and distribution capacity by 36%, storing over 630,000 kg of fruit and vegetables daily, compared with the previous daily capacity of approximately 140,000 kg. It features a 3,400 sq. m refrigerated storage area, which is run by a state-of-the-art warehouse management system with voice picking technology. There are two separate docks for local fresh produce and internationally sourced products as well as six docks for delivery trucks. SPAR has put environmentally friendly measures in place to conserve energy.
