We round up the latest news from the Netherlands as Albert Heijn gets set for Christmas online and Picnic, Poiesz and DekaMarkt invest in their own online services. In other news, Lidl has opened its largest store.
Albert Heijn gets set for Christmas online...
Albert Heijn is expecting a record number of online grocery orders over the Christmas period, with many people expected to order online groceries for the first time. Deliveries will also be made on Sunday 24 and Sunday 31st December for the first time. A 35% increase in online grocery orders is expected, while 7.5m fresh and sustainable products will be delivered to shoppers. Customers can already reserve their delivery slot for added convenience.
Albert Heijn will also offering its Allerhande Christmas Box, which offers ingredients and recipes to create a four-course dinner. This Christmas will be the first time where the box will be available for two people. A complementary wine box is also available, with wine specially chosen for each course.

...As Picnic expands to Rotterdam
In related news, online grocery provider Picnic is widening its delivery reach to Rotterdam, Capelle and Nieuwerkerk from January 2018.
Co-founder Michiel Muller said, ‘For a city with the size of Rotterdam we needed a bit more preparation and now we are ready for it’.
To incentivise users to sign up for the service by 17th January, Picnic will give shoppers a free bar of Tony’s Chocolonely chocolate with their first order. Five bars will contain a golden ticket, giving recipients a minute’s free shopping with Picnic.
Picnic has been broadening its delivery reach in 2017, including expanding to Zoetermeer and Benthuizen.
Poiesz launches online grocery...
Meanwhile, Poiesz has launched an online grocery service in the Netherlands in partnership with meal service company, Van Smaak. The 70-strong supermarket chain will be offering free deliveries on orders over €40. Click and collect will also be available.
In the mornings, delivery vans will be used to fulfil joint Van Smaak and Poiesz orders. In the afternoons, online grocery orders will be fulfilled.
...As DekaMarkt relaunches online grocery website
Elsewhere in the market, DekaMarkt relaunched its online grocery website earlier this week. Jeffrey Peereboom, online marketing manager said, ‘The recipe pages have been completely renewed and we have launched a new content strategy with a strong focus on video’.
Bart Vos, Digital Shop Manager added, ‘We connect with this website at all stages of the customer journey. In particular, we have made the ordering and home delivery of groceries faster and easier for our customer’.
Lidl opens largest Dutch store
On other news, Lidl has opened its largest store in the Netherlands. The store, which is 1,800 sq. m in size is located in the Boven ’t Y shopping centre in north Amsterdam. The store emphasises energy efficiency, with LED and motion sensitive lighting. To celebrate the store opening, the first 100 shoppers received a free bunch of flowers, while customers also had the chance to win a minute of free shopping.
