Auchan has been given the go-ahead by local competition authorities to acquire Metro's Real operation in Ukraine, according to press reports.
Cleared by antimonopoly committee
Ukraine's antimonopoly committee has reportedly given Auchan and its real estate arm permission to acquire a share of more than 50% in the local business, which includes stores and real estate.
Integration will be main task in year ahead
At year-end 2012, Auchan operated over 130 stores in Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine put together. The Ukrainian portfolio is the smallest, with only eight stores, which the Real acquisition will take up to ten. This transaction, when fully cleared in all markets, will almost double its presence in the eastern European region. Integrating the acquisition will be a major task for Auchan in the year ahead.
