Romania round-up: Expansion and promotion on retailers’ minds

Against a backdrop of Eurostat revealing that the volume of retail trade fell by 3.3% in Romania in December 2012, when compared to the same month in 2011, retailers have announced a number of initiatives for the market.

Delhaize trials store design in Bucharest

Delhaize, under the Mega Image banner, has opened a ‘concept store’ in Bucharest. The new outlet is larger than the company’s standard, at 1,600 sq m, versus an average of 570 sq m. Given the extra selling space, the Mega Image store will have enlarged fresh offer, especially in relation to fruits, vegetables and meat.

Meanwhile, Rewe has also begun to expand its XXL Mega Discount banner after five years of flat store numbers. The store, in Galati, has involved the rebranding of a Billa to XXL Mega Discount.

Real offers money saving promotion

In an attempt to drive footfall at its stores, Real has launched a new promotional campaign that will see shoppers who spend RON200 in one shop, between 7 to 13 February, offered a voucher that provides them with RON20 off their next shop, as long as it is between 15 and 20 February. Real said that the promotion is on top of existing offers available in store.
