Retailer alliance EMD has announced it will, from now, require its private label suppliers to adhere to its sourcing code of conduct.
EMD committed to Responsibility and Sustainable Sourcing
EMD said its sourcing code of conduct sets out 12 sustainability criteria, which are based on the Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative of the Consumer Goods Forum. EMD noted that private label suppliers who do not comply with the new guidelines ‘are accompanied by the international retail alliance and given support in achieving this goal’.
Code of conduct underpins EMD’s aims
EMD highlighted the code of conduct will underpin its and its member companies’ aim ‘to provide sustainable produced products of outstanding quality to consumers in the single countries’. To ensure food safety in accordance with the Global Food Safety Initiative, EMD said ‘all suppliers involved [will be] carefully monitored’. As a result, it said that the new purchasing guidelines made certain areas indispensable:
- Strict compliance with high social standards
- Commitment to recognised food safety standards
