Carrefour and Total have announced they are to collaborate together, an initiative that will see franchised Carrefour Express convenience stores opened on Total gas forecourts.
Two stores already in operation
Carrefour has already opened two stores on Total forecourts in Stolno and Strzyzawa. The agreement with Total is Carrefour’s second franchise contract, following the signing of a similar one with Avia. The tie ups with Total and Avia will enable Carrefour to expand its small store presence in Poland relatively quickly and in a cost-effective way.
The franchising agreement with Total comes soon after Auchan announced plans to franchise its supermarket and convenience store banners in the country. With more retailers looking to grow their proximity store presence in Poland, competition for new partners and sites is likely to increase in the medium term.
Opening stores in convenient locations
Commenting on the collaboration, Carrefour Poland’s director for convenience stores, Michal Florkiewicz, said: “We are very pleased about establishing cooperation with Total… This is a response to the demand on the Polish market, which needs stores in convenient locations. Petrol stations have become a place where you can not only refuel but also do your shopping, eat a meal or drink coffee. Furthermore, they are open seven days a week, until late in the evening and often around the clock.”
