Loblaw goes live with Loop refillable packaging

Loblaw has launched its partnership with Loop, the circular ecommerce platform developed by TerraCycle, to offer a range products in refillable packaging.

Offering branded and private label products

Having announced the partnership in 2019, Loblaw has initially launched in the Ontario market. Customers can shop for a range of food and household products in refillable packaging, including ice cream, sauces, snacks, pet food and toothpaste. In addition to products from Loblaw’s President’s Choice private label range, customers can also purchase products from Häagen-Dazs, Heinz, and Hershey Canada. With the launch, Canada joins the United States, the UK and France as the Loop platform continues to expand around the world.

How it works

Customers can order through www.loopstore.ca and maboutiqueloop.ca, paying a deposit on each package which is fully refundable when it is returned. Packages are shipped using Loop Canada’s exclusive logistics provider, FedEx. After use, consumers place the empty containers back into the Loop Tote, and then return the tote by either scheduling a free pickup online or dropping it off at one of the more than 500 participating FedEx retail locations in Ontario. Loop sorts and professionally cleans the packaging and tote bag.

Growing focus for industry

Launched in 2019 by international recycling company TerraCycle and a group of 25 leading consumer product companies including Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Nestle and PepsiCo, the service has been designed to reduce reliance on single use packaging. The aim is to offer a convenient solution to customers, while maintaining environmental benefits.

Growing focus for industry

The issue of sustainable packaging continues to rise up the industry’s agenda, with over 88% of retailers and manufacturers (Source: IGD Supply Chain Analysis), selecting packaging as the area they think will get the most focus within the sustainability agenda over the next five years. In addition to being an important issue for consumers, a shift towards more sustainable packaging also has the potential to impact other objectives including waste and recycling, transport and carbon missions.
