Loblaw has expanded the range of meal kits for delivery available from its pcchef.ca service through partnering with a range of Toronto-based restaurants.

Launched during COVID-19 pandemic

Loblaw launched its PC Chef delivery service earlier this year, offering a range of meal kits available for next-day home delivery in the Greater Toronto Area. Initially, the retailer offered a range of private label kits under the President’s Choice brand, ranging from $12.00 to $19.50, with a flat delivery fee of $5. The retailer has expanded this service to offer a range of restaurant meal kits, including partnerships with La Carnita, The Burger’s Priest and Kinton Ramen. Loblaw is one of the first retailers globally to offer restaurant-branded meal kits.

Partnership approach

Retailer and restaurant partnerships have been a key feature of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the US, HEB in Houston partnered with Max & Louie’s New York Diner and Rosario’s to offer ready-made meals. In the UK, Morrisons added ‘fakeaway’; boxes to its food box range, containing meals from some of the country’s UK favourite restaurants. Several retailers, including 7-Eleven in the US and Ministop in the Philippines, have made some of their popular hot food items available for home preparation and baking.

Local support

For retailers, partnering with foodservice outlets has been a way to support local businesses impacted by the crisis and offer unique items to their customers. Given the stay-at-home mandates, consumers have been seeking inspiration around recipes and meal ideas. The ease and convenience of meal kits also makes them a great family activity.
