Vancouver-based Food X Technologies has signed a strategic partnership with Carrefour Group to accelerate the retailer’s ecommerce capabilities.
Integration of Food X technologies by mid-2021
The partnership with Food X Technologies has been formed to support Carrefour in increasing the productivity and profitability of its ecommerce operating systems while enhancing its digital customer experience. Under an exclusive agreement for the Belgium market initially, Carrefour will integrate Food X Technologies’ end-to-end software-as-a-service (SaaS) based system for online grocery management by mid-2021. Maximising space utilisation, reducing product and packaging waste
The Food X platform for online grocery ordering, automated fulfillment and home delivery encompasses front-end applications, inventory, inbound, outbound and logistics along with a front-end website API. The company has also developed proprietary technology for freshness management, fresh fulfillment and machine learning based order planning intelligence. One of the unique aspects of the platform is its intelligent packing algorithms which maximise vehicle space utilisation while ensuring product integrity. This will also underpin Carrefour’s “Act for Food” objectives through reducing product waste and plastic and support the use of reusable packaging.
Potential to expand the initiative to other markets
Food X will also support the development of a new state-of-the art warehouse designed specifically for grocery ecommerce. Carrefour will develop its first Central Fulfillment Centre (CFC) in Belgium. This will service both click and collect and home delivery customers. In addition to this pilot, Carrefour and Food X will consider expanding their partnership to other markets and other fulfilment models, including micro-fulfillment centres. Carrefour and Food X Technologies will also partner to incorporate ongoing technology learning and innovation on sustainable business practices. Commenting on the initiative, Amélie Oudéa-Castera, head of the customer, data and tech division at Carrefour Group, stated,

Operating in the channel for 20 years
Food X was initially developed as the software behind the company’s Spud.ca’s (Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery) integrated food business eco-system. This includes online retail, community retail locations, food preparation services, wholesale and last mile distribution. Two years ago, it developed a multi-client grocery ecommerce fulfillment centre, optimising its experience of operating a grocery ecommerce business in the Vancouver market for over 20 years. For the launch it partnered with Walmart Canada, enabling the retailer to start a grocery delivery service in the Vancouver market. Earlier this summer, it announced a three-year strategic alliance with robotic warehouse and fulfillment system provider, Attabotics, to leverage common synergies and streamline technology and operations at its fulfillment centres.
