Sobeys has launched a new look and feel for its core Sobeys supermarket format in the Legacy neighbourhood, located in south-east Calgary. We look inside this new store.

Cleaner look, sharper lines

This new store is the first from Sobeys to feature this updated look and feel. While several elements are retained from the original Sobeys concept, new signposting has been introduced for fresh food areas and counters. This features new signage and overhanging architectural elements which bring a pop of colour to the different areas. This aids shopper navigation and adds points of interest through the store. Overall, this is a much brighter and cleaner look and feel, given the strong focus on dark wood fixtures and accents in the previous concept.

Driving urban growth through Farm Boy

The launch of this concept comes as the retailer continues to push ahead with the roll-out of its Farm Boy supermarket format in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). This is the retailer’s main format to drive growth in urban locations in the GTA. In addition to new sites, former Sobeys and Sobeys Urban Fresh locations have also been converted to the Farm Boy format. Acquired in 2018 with 26 stores, the retailer is on-track to double the size of the chain over a five-year period, with 42 stores trading, or in development.

Longo’s deal brings new format capabilities

Earlier this year, the company announced plans to acquire 51% of Longo’s a leading food retailer in the GTA with 36 stores. This provides it with an additional route to growth. Longo’s stores are well regarded for their strengths in fresh and prepared foods. In addition to large format supermarkets, it also operates mid-sized supermarkets, ranging from 11,000 sq ft to 40,000 sq ft, along with five smaller format stores under ‘The Market by Longo’s’ banner.
