Using the Datacentre tool:
The retailer sales are in nominal terms (or current prices), which means they include inflation.
You can calculate the real values by using the Consumer Price Inflation measure, found in the ‘Add Measures > Macroeconomic’ section of the tool. You can arrive at real values by taking inflation away from nominal sales.
We do record the Consumer Price Inflation measure, found in the ‘Add Measures > Macroeconomic’ section of the tool, as forecast by the IMF.
Yes. Once you’ve run a report in Datacentre, look for the ‘cog’ icon in the header of the Retailer column. Click on this for an option to exclude franchise sales from the report.
Alternatively, when you select a retailer while building a report (under Add Data Types), a cog icon will appear to the right of the name. Click on this to view the retailer’s group structure. Scroll down the list and any names marked by an ‘F’ icon, (representing a franchise) can be deselected.
For franchisors, sales shown are net retail sales, not the revenue generated through wholesale sales to franchise partners.
Franchised stores are usually managed directly by the franchisor and combine many different independent owners (e.g. Carrefour convenience stores in France are mostly franchised to independent store owners).
Datacentre records sales from the main retailers in each country; this sum excludes the smaller retail outlets, which we don’t track.
The performance of the leading retailers in each channel provides indicative trends; we are making full channel sizes and forecasts available for key markets in their Country Presentations (select your country from ‘Markets’ tab, and click ‘Presentations’ along the orange bar).
Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is the average yearly growth rate over multiple years. It only takes into consideration the final and the start values, and assumes equal growth for each period in between.
CAGRs are available in the ‘Top Market Forecasts’ chart on the At-A-Glance page for large international retailers on Retail Analysis.
Year-on-year growth is the total growth between the final and start years. Using the Datacentre tool:
Non-grocery sales are sales from a retailer’s specific non-grocery operations (e.g. financial services, property, or fuel).
Non-grocery items sold within majority grocery stores (supermarkets, convenience stores, etc.) are included in grocery sales.
