Pan Asian retailer Dairy Farm's local partner in the Philippines accelerates store openings.
Dairy Farm's partner Rustan's accelerating store openings
This news follows Dairy Farm's entry to the Philippines in 2012 via a 50% partnership with domestic retailer Rustan's Supercenters.
Last year Rustan's Supercenter opened three new stores. In 2013 it plans to open 15 new stores, and a further 20 in 2014. These will be a mixture of its own hypermarket and supermarket fascias, alongside Dairy Farm fascia Wellcome supermarket.
Building national presence
Rustan's is building its national presence in the market, already operating stores in the south in Cagayan de Oro and Cebu. New store openings are likely to include locations in Luzon.
Store profitability is key
Rustan's partnership with Dairy Farm provided financial resources alongside in-depth industry expertise - both factors will bolster Rustan's performance in the increasingly competitive Philippines market, led by the domestic operator SM Group.
With this competition in mind, Rustan's president Bienvenido Tantaco III has emphasised that the expansion of its grocery network will target sustainable and profitable growth, quoted in local press, "We're [going to] expand at our own pace. We will make sure that the expansion that we do is rational - any store we open will be profitable".
