Carrefour acquires proximity stores in Spain

As it looks to strengthen its position as the second largest retailer in Spain, Carrefour has acquired 172 supermarkets and convenience stores in the country.

Stores to grow presence in key areas…

Carrefour has bought the 172 Supersol stores for €78m from the Maxima Group, expanding its presence in the key markets of Andalusia and Madrid. It said the stores had generated net sales in the region of €450m in 2019. Once the acquisition has been completed, which should be at the beginning of 2021, Carrefour said it would convert the stores to its Market (supermarket), Express (convenience) and Supeco banners as it looks to build out its presence across all three channels.

In the short term Carrefour will aim to improve the stores’ performance, enabling them ‘to benefit from [its] commercial policy and purchasing conditions’ as it looks to improve their sales densities and the cost structures.

…And support its omnichannel aims

The stores, in the longer term, will play a key role in supporting Carrefour’s online and omnichannel growth. In its 2020 half year results the retailer said its food ecommerce sales had doubled in Spain because of the lockdown in the country. Growing shopper interest in the channel will support its medium-term growth, which will be aided by the new stores, which will become pick-up points for online grocery orders in time.
